Why does Tobe stay with Emily in the story "A Rose for Emily"?

Interestingly, in Southern states such as Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, there were for some time descendants of slaves who lived on what was the property of the slave owner. Not infrequently, the property where the cabins of former slaves lived was legally bequeathed to the children of these slaves, and the family remained there as these buildings were their homes. So the Grierson's house is most likely considered home by Tobe.

Also, since Tobe is an older man, he would probably have few chances for employment outside the Grierson home. It might be difficult to leave the Grierson property where he has both a job and living quarters. Besides, he, too, is a "relic"; he is part of an antiquated way of life, and it may be too difficult for this older servant to break from this way of life. Perhaps, then, a certain observation about Miss Emily applies to him, as well:

...with nothing left, [he] would have to cling to that which had robbed [him], as people will.

This idea would, perhaps, explain his remaining in a cultural milieu familiar to him despite the oddity of Miss Emily.
