Why are producers essential for all living things?

Producers are the original source of food for all living things. Since food is necessary for energy production and thus the sustenance of life, producers are essential to all living things. Producers are the original source of food for all living things. Since food is necessary for energy production and thus the sustenance of life, producers are essential to all living things. Green plants are the dominant producer on Earth. They contain a pigment, known as chlorophyll, which enables them to carry out the process of photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight. During photosynthesis, the following reaction takes place and food is produced in the form of glucose molecules.

`6 CO_2 + 6 H_2O + sunlight -> C_6H_12O_6 + 6 O_2`

The food generated is utilized by all living things and is broken down in the process of cellular respiration, to generate energy, as per the following equation:

`C_6H_12O_6 + 6 O_2 -> 6 CO_2 + 6 H_2O + ATP`

This energy is used for day to day operations of living things (such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, etc.).

Producers are at the base of every food chain as the original source of energy for primary consumers, secondary consumers, and tertiary consumers.

Thus, producers are essential to all living things.

Hope this helps.
